The First Step Towards Personal Style

Posted on 30 April 2009 by D. Travis North

Guy Tal is an inspiring landscape and nature photographer.  But who would have thought he’d be such an inspiration psychologically?  His latest post, titled The First Step Towards Personal Style, seems to be on topic with a lot of the things I’ve discussed lately:  Developing your own personal style.  It certainly is a focus of my own at the moment, and it should certainly be in the back of your mind at all times.  But Guy’s insight and observation has me thinking just a little more.

  • @Kevin - On the other hand, I do see a lot of merit in shooting the cliche shots. Not because it's unique, original or even that great of a shot. But I think that to some degree, doing the cliche shots gets it out of your system. Then you can afford to be create and explore. Albeit, you need to plan for that and you need to say to yourself "okay, I'm done the cliche shot, now lets get on with it".
  • Guy's article really sums up what photography is all about for most of us. I remember years ago watching photographers looking at Ansel Adams images and literally trying to duplicate his vision. There are even rumours floating around that in some areas there are three holes to put your tripod legs in, this courtesy of thousands of photographers shooting from the same location.

Personally I try to explore and find new ways of looking at the world. I make an effort to go to areas that have not been over photographed... how many Eiffel Tower photos does the world really need? I do look at other photographers work, we all can learn this way, but I hope that in my subconscious I'm not trying to copy them. As for the Eiffel Tower, I saw some stunning images the other day that were different from anything else I have seen before. It's all in the creativity.
